Fair Grounds Recap – Jan 11th

Fast main track and off the turf again. Three wire jobs on the main (2 at 1mile-40yds). Early-pressing speed ruled the day in the four sprints carded. Five races at a mile and forty yards produced two wire jobs, 1 stalker, and a pair of off the pace winners.

Miguel Mena booted home a pair. Shaun Bridgmohan and Steve Asmussen teamed up for two more winners.

Military Hero (2nd race) finished an improved 4th in this off the turf maiden route. The Asmussen trainee is going the right way and is a contender on either surface next time.

Candiano (8th) was fractious in the gate and ended up a clear 2nd in this off the turf entry level route for state breds. The wire job winner (Sean Lafitte) got away with crawling fractions under PVal. The runner-up is in fine form and could easily find the winners’ circle next time.

On the analysis front, I got home top Dragum (), and I also tabbed the cold .40 exacta with Perus Queen.

Fair Grounds Preview – Jan 15th

A 9-race program will be run on Friday at the Fair Grounds. Cloudy skies are in the forecast with a 20% chance of rain. A high temperature of 61 is expected. Pick six carryover of ,263.

The Friday card marks the first of three special Starlight Racing Programs. First post is 5PM central time, and the opening race is the lone grass race carded.

My daily full cards from Fair Grounds are available through Today’s Racing Digest (free sign up), and I will be posting a daily free selection on their site as well. Click here to view my Friday free selection (5th race) from Fair Grounds.

The feature (8th race) is an optional claiming route. Flying Pegasus is the 5-2 morning line favorite exiting a needed show finish versus similar local foes. He is best remembered for landing the place behind Friesan Fire in the Grade 3 Risen Star here last year. Robby Albarado has the call for Ralph Nicks. They also team up with 4th race fav Sweetest Rhythm, and I’ll make them my combo to watch.
