A handful of graded events were contested on Feb 20th, and the performance of the day belonged to my new number one Derby contender…Eskendereya.
The Todd Pletcher trainee came into the ‘Youth off a sharp allowance score, and the early-pressing sort went off as 3rd betting choice behind Buddy’s Saint and Jackson Bend.
The well bred colt tracked the pace, took over and pulled away to an emphatic score. He earned a triple digit speed rating for his efforts and has all the tools it takes to wear the roses. Note that he is 3 for 3 on conventional dirt.

Jackson Bend chased the pace and gamely held the place. He is a hard knocking sort and will remain in my top ten. Aikenite rallied for the show in a rebound effort. Remains a cut below the best.
Buddy’s Saint experienced a rough trip and never got to run his preferred prominent throughout race. Can rebound next time, but questions remain regarding his stamina.
Discreetly Mine stole the Risen Star, and the top three ran that way throughout. The local prep for the Louisiana Derby was apparently weak, and I do not think this was a major Derby prep.
One colt from the Risen Star deserves a mention. Drosselmeyer finished a close-up 4th as the fav. Before everyone writes him off, remember that he earned a career top in his 3yo bow, and he was coming back in 20 days at the Fair Grounds. He got no pace help either, so his effort is better than appears.
Conveyance ran his rivals off their feet in the Southwest. The Bob Baffert trainee sports the look of a miler, and it is doubtful he carries his speed much farther.
Dublin rallied for the place in the Oaklawn Park event. That was his first attempt over a route of ground and a fine start to his 3yo campaign. Should move forward for Lukas.
The El Camino Real at Golden Gate was also run on Saturday, and another Todd Pletcher trainee (Connemara) got the candy. He looks like a plodding synthetic specialist at this point.
D’Funnybone returned in the pink for Rick Dutrow in the Hutcheson. His only bad effort was the BC Juvenile on synthetic. He deserves another chance to route and might go next in the Florida Derby. Have a feeling he is a sprinter, and it seems like speed types are all over the place on the Derby trail.
Odysseus romped in an allowance event at Tampa, and he goes next in the Tampa Bay Derby. Promising colt bears watching.
1. Eskendereya (Giant’s Causeway) – Sharp win in the Fountain of Youth moves him from 3rd to first on my list.
2. Lookin At Lucky (Smart Strike) – Baffert torn between Rebel and San Felipe for his 3yo bow.
3. American Lion (Tiznow) – Better than appears show finish in the Robert Lewis. He needs to take a step forward next time, and I am expecting him to do just that.
4. Super Saver (Maria’s Mon) – Strong wire job victory in the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) at Churchill. The Todd Pletcher (WinStar Farm) trainee should only improve with distance and experience.
5. Jackson Bend (Hear No Evil) – Gamely held place behind runaway winner Eskendereya in FOY. Hard knocker.
6. Noble’s Promise (Cuvee) – Working in Florida and might resurface in Rebel.
7. Dublin (Afleet Alex) – Moves up from honorable mention list following a solid place finish in Southwest. That was his 3yo route bow.
8. Drosselmeyer (Distorted Humor) – Deserves another chance after getting no pace help in Risen Star. Look for an improved effort next out.
9. Vale of York (Invincible Spirit) – Surprise BC Juvenile winner brought good turf form to Santa Anita, and he proved he could handle synthetic ground. Godolphin runner is not bred for dirt, but the new track in Dubai (synthetic) should suit him.
10. Interactif (Broken Vow) – Was nosed in grassy Hallandale Beach return at Gulfstream on Feb 7th. The versatile Pletcher trainee has the Santa Anita Derby as an early spring goal.
Honorable Mention: Buddy’s Saint (Bruce Levine), Caracortado (Mike Machowsky), Dave In Dixie (John Sadler), Rule (Todd Pletcher), William’s Kitten (Michael Maker)

The 1st race is a maiden claiming route for 3yo fillies. Recent Doug O’Neill claim Miss Seamless looms the one to beat.
The 2nd race is a two lifetime claiming route, and Orient Emperor is the target.
The 3rd race kicks off the pick six, and this maiden downhill sprint seems ripe for an upset. First time starter Ruination sports a decent grass pedigree and seems worth a gander. I have all of the pick six action covered on the pick six blog website.

The 4th race is an an optional claiming sprint, and Underground is a likely low odds wire job winner.
The 5th race is a claiming sprint, and Silent Stalk looms large for Julio Canani.
The 6th race is my MySpace free selection of the day.
The 7th race is an allowance sprint, and 9-5 fav Alpha Kitten was last seen winning the Grade 2 Santa Ynez (Jan ’09).
The 8th race is my Horse Racing Nation free pick of the day.

Fast main track and firm turf course (no wire jobs). Stalkers and closers best on both surfaces.
Riding double for John Jacinto and Jamie Theriot.
Frustrating end to the early pick four. I needed Musicstreet Menace or Tale of the Court in the final leg, and the former could not quite reel in stalking winner Hype.

On the analysis front, I got home tops Speedy Solution (.40) and Betty’s Champ (.60). I also tabbed to tab the 4th race exacta (.80), Pick 3 (race 2-4, 5.40), and the 6th race exacta (best bet #2, .80).
Fair Grounds Preview – Feb 27th
An 11-race program will be run on Saturday at the Fair Grounds. Pick six carryover of ,982. There is a 40% chance of AM showers with a high temperature of 56.
Saturday’s feature race is the k Allen Lacombe Memorial Handicap for fillies and mares traveling a mile and a sixteenth on the turf. Tizaqueena is the 8-5 morning line favorite, and the 5yo daughter of Tiznow won a graded turf race at Churchill last year. Note that she is 2 for 2 over the local weeds.

The opening race is a flat mile claiming affair. Outside Shot is sharp and breaks from 29% rail post. Late running threat for hot barn.
The 2nd race is an optional claiming event. Originally scheduled for turf, it will now be run at 6.5f on Pro-Ride synthetic footing. Gilded Gem drops out of a graded event and could tag these.
The 3rd race is a claiming sprint for 4yo’s and up. Point Attended is the target in a race that came up light on pace.

The 4th race kicks off the pick six, and I have all the action covered on the pick six blog website. This affair has also been moved to the Pro-Ride surface. Sweet Maker finished a solid 3rd in debut, and place finisher came back to score.
The 5th race is a maiden claiming route, and first time gelding Swiss Currency might get brave if able to shake loose early.
The 6th race is my MySpace free selection of the day.
The 7th race is an optional claiming route, and consistent filly Fund Raiser is the one to deny.
The Crystal Water Handicap (8th race) is my Horse Racing Nation free pick of the day. The flat mile stakes affair remains on turf and will be run on yielding ground.
9th and final race is a maiden claiming sprint, and Chimu adds blinkers and could go better under Bejarano.

The opening race is a maiden claiming extended sprint. Akeela improved 2nd time out, and she could move up again for new trainer Mike Mitchell.
The 2nd race is a claiming sprint for 3yo fillies. Cenizo dueled and weakened in first start versus winners. Best as a stalker and could go better 3rd off the shelf.

The 3rd race is a downhill sprint for fillies and mares. Asanti has been part of trifecta in all 10 outings, and the gem of consistency landed the place in lone turf outing. This race kicks off the pick six, and I have all the action covered on the pick six blog website.

An 8-race card is on tap at Santa Anita on March 4th. Partly cloudy skies are expected with a high temperature of 66. There is a pick six carryover of more than k, and the pool figures to exceed half a million dollars.
The opening race is a maiden claiming sprint. Chailepis broke slow and was not able to run her preferred early-pressing race last time. Prominent throughout threat with a clean beginning.
The 2nd race is an allowance route for fillies and mares. Saucey Evening is out of the stakes ranks for Graham Motion, and she handles synthetic footing.

The 3rd race is a downhill sprint for 3yo’s. This race kicks off the pick six, and I have all the action covered on the pick six blog website. This is also my Horse Racing Nation free pick of the day.
The 4th race is a maiden claiming route for fillies and mares. The Legal Blonde is tagged for the first time and will be finishing under Victor Espinoza.
The 5th race is my MySpace free selection of the day.
The 6th race is a downhill sprint for 4yo’s and up. Self Insured has been going well on synthetic recently, and he has won on turf before.
The 7th race is an optional claiming route for 3yo’s. Sister Dawn impressed in synthetic sprint bow, and the promising Sadler trainee is worth following.
The 8th race is a maiden downhill sprint. This one seems primed to be won by a firster, and Streamline Baby could hit the ground running for Vienna.

A tale of two weather days. Fast and firm through first five races, then the rains hit. Sloppy track for races six through eight, and the final two races were scrapped due to unsafe conditions. Main played fair, and the lone turf (7.5f) race run was nabbed in wire job fashion.
Another nice route win by promising 3yo Fast Alex. He could be headed to the Louisiana Derby.
On the analysis front, I got home top Fast Alex (best bet #1, .40). I also tabbed the 6th race exacta (.20).

Fair Grounds Preview – March 5th
A 9-race program will be run on Friday at the Fair Grounds. Sunny skies are expected with a high temperature of 62.
Three turf races are on the docket, and grass racing should be given the green light if the weather forecast holds.
The allowance feature on the main includes Ide Like A Double. The Louisiana bred has been on a steady stakes diet and has had the misfortune of running into Star Guitar numerous times. His main rival is Flashy Wise Cat, and the latter tries a route of ground after a pair of sharp sprint wins here.
