Fair Grounds Recap – Jan 16th

A wet beginning to the holiday weekend. Sloppy main track and off the turf again. Early-pressing types dominated the first fives races. The track pulled a bias reversal with no wire jobs in the final five events, and the card ended with late runner Skeeter Jones rolling from well behind.

James Graham, Shane Sellers, and Jamie Theriot each booted home a pair.

After watching the first five races, it appeared that Lee City Slew would coast around the track in the 6th, but he set the pace and finished a distant 3rd. Power Surge and Mr. Porter bided their time in the 5th running John E. Jackson Memorial, and the former got the job done by a hard found ½ length. Jamie Theriot rode the winner for Bret Calhoun.

Bombs away in the Happy Ticket as Anything But Quiet (0) rallied for the neck win over Yare. Billy Patin guided home the daughter of Real Quiet for Carl Woodley.

Not a good day on the analysis front as I could only muster the chalky opening day exacta. From a betting standpoint, the disqualification of Goaltogoal in the 7th ruined my afternoon.

Fair Grounds Preview – Jan 17th

A 10-race program will be run on Sunday at the Fair Grounds. Better weather is on the way with morning clouds giving way to afternoon sun. Temperature of 57 is expected. Turf races likely to be transferred once again. Pick six carryover of ,233.

The featured 9th race is an entry level allowance affair for fillies and mares traveling a mile and forty yards on the main track. Clear Sailing is the 8-5 favorite, and the 4yo daughter of Empire Maker exits a sharp 2nd time out local maiden sprint tally. That was her first start in more than a year, and she tries two turns in her first start versus winners. She’s bred to route and does not meet the toughest group.

My daily full cards from Fair Grounds are available through Today’s Racing Digest (free sign up). I also have a Digest free pick page, and my Sunday free selection is the 10th race from Fair Grounds.

Daily results and video can be found on the Horse Racing Nation Fair Grounds Race Course page.
